During class, I somehow managed to describe myself as a Mexican soap opera star…in Arabic. Amazing, believe me, I know. I’m pretty sure my language teacher thinks I’m amazing too. And a little nutso.
It is a bit stressful since there are only two of us in class with a teacher who doesn’t speak English. Thankfully, Debbie and I have discovered that asking highly important questions like, “How do you say ‘penguin’?” and “How do you say ‘martian’?” and then drawing the new vocabulary we learn on the whiteboard provide us with a great deal of education…and comic relief.
(In all seriousness, these tactics really are effective for language learning. I might not know how to count to ten, but I can say “martian.” That is good progress.)
